I love the juxtaposition of the prostitute with the statue on the table beside her. (I also love writing the word “juxtaposition”)

Operation Christmas Child is where you pack a shoe box with things such as school supplies, toys, and hygiene products for boy or girl in a certain age category. I’ve done it for the past few years and it’s always a joy. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy so it doesn’t cost too much to do. These shoe boxes are then shipped to children around the world. You can include a letter as well and your address if you want. Last year I actually got a thank you letter from the boy mine was sent to in Africa. Click the picture for more information such as where to ship or drop off your shoe box. National collection week is November 16-23.

Grateful Dead Tie-Dyed Empire State Building Tonight (via)

The Empire State Building will burst into tie-dye lighting October 19 in honor of the Grateful Dead. The special lighting ceremony is in celebration of the opening of an exhibit at the New York Historical Society honoring the band. The tie-dye color scheme harkens to the iconic group’s original imagery and psychedelic influences.

On October 21, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will attend a charity fundraiser to celebrate the opening of The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society, an exhibit cataloguing the career and accomplishments of one of America’s most socially influential bands. Through an extensive variety of media, even including fan mail, the exhibition explores the history of the band from 1965-1995. A section of the exhibit chronicles the social phenomenon of the band’s most dedicated fans, the Deadheads. Most of the exhibitions materials were contributed from the extensive collection of the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Recently, the Empire State Building was lit red and yellow in celebration of the 60^th anniversary of the Republic of China. Tonight’s tie-dye lighting, though less controversial, is sure to be a sight to see and one not soon forgotten.

This week also marks the 35th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s Winterland shows that closed out the first decade of their career together. I’ll have to post some stuff from those shows, because they were some of their best ever (also featured on the Grateful Dead Movie).

Vera Bradley Life - The Magazine has a website. I am still obsessing over the new patterns and prints. It’s too hard to keep up with each season, the designs are always so unique and detailed but somehow maintain that Vera Signature look and style. LOVE.

this may sound lame, but i loved some vera in college. my first print was the now discontinued french blue. they make great makeup and carry on bags.

A couple of weekends ago, I officiated the marriage of Elaine’s sister Sue and her fiance Pascal. They asked me to write a few minutes on the topic of love, and the result was my “Everyone’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen).”

At times you’ll feel closer and at times more distant. Neither is indicative of how you’ll feel in a week, month, or year. You’re like two moons in orbit around the same planet. Enjoy the closeness and the distance and know that neither is permanent.

Make a voice for the cat.

Make dates. Only seeing someone at home at the end of the day can give you a distorted sense of who they are.

Make big compromises. You’ll be amazed how they work out in your favor. For instance, I didn’t want to move to New York, and Elaine didn’t want to date me.

When you fight, break it up with the occasional hug. After the fight’s over, you won’t remember the resolution so much as the fight itself. It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.

If you’re watching a TV series on DVD together, don’t start watching episodes without the other person, or they’ll hold it against both you and “Lost” for the rest of your lives.

You’ll eventually let loose a nickname in front of your friends, so make sure it’s something acceptable, like “Love,” and not “Captain banana pants.”

Spend whole days together. You’ll be amazed what you didn’t know about each other.

Eventually you will know everything there is to know about each other. That’s a very exciting point. That’s when you can stop facing each other and start facing the world. Side-by-side is even more intimate than face-to-face.

When they were young, Sue and Elaine couldn’t beat Mario 3 level 8. At some point, they’re going to want to. Hop from cannon ball to cannon ball and earn enough points to collect extra lives in case you die. I just saved you three grueling weeks.

Don’t read the diary. Do you think they keep a diary to write about how amazing you are? DON’T DO IT.

Be the second sibling to get married. That way you can learn from the other’s mistakes. (Take it or leave it.)

Finally, ignore every piece of advice you hear about love and relationships… except for this: love each other stubbornly. Stubbornly. And be stubborn about nothing else.
